ICE questions nearly tripled as a share of immigration inquiries as people sought guidance about detention, deportation and their legal rights
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, UNITED STATES, September 16, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — As immigration enforcement expands across the country, questions about what happens when someone, or a family member, encounters U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are taking on new urgency.
New data from AskALawyerOnCall, an online platform connecting people with licensed attorneys, shows that ICE-specific legal questions surged 76% year over year during the first eight months of 2026.
The increase comes amid a significant expansion in immigration enforcement nationwide. ICE reported a record 50,925 arrests in August, following record-setting activity in June and July. Expanded federal partnerships with state and local law-enforcement agencies have also increased the number of settings in which people may encounter immigration authorities.
At the same time, changes affecting Temporary Protected Status and other humanitarian programs have left some previously protected immigrants uncertain about their legal standing and what could happen if they encounter ICE.
“What I’m seeing is a noticeable shift in the nature and urgency of immigration questions. While people continue to ask about employment visas, permanent residency and navigating the immigration process, ICE enforcement and detention questions tend to arise when the issue has suddenly become immediate and deeply personal – a spouse or family member has been detained, someone is concerned about an ICE encounter, or a family is trying to understand what happens next,” explains Queeneth Udowa-Ekpenyong, an immigration attorney on AskALawyerOnCall.

Immigration Questions Are Becoming More Urgent and Enforcement-Focused
Employment and student immigration—including work permits, H-1B visas, F-1 status and Optional Practical Training—remained the most common category of immigration questions submitted to AskALawyerOnCall in 2026. Green cards and permanent residency were the second-largest area of concern.
But the sharp increase in ICE-related questions points to a growing need beyond traditional immigration planning: preparing for the possibility of detention, deportation or an unexpected enforcement encounter.
